playtester selection

When you sign up as a playtester, you’re added to our extensive database. Each test has specific criteria to ensure scientific and statistically valid results, often requiring a diverse sample. We use these criteria to randomly select participants from our database.

For instance, we might consider your play history. If we’re testing a feature that needs specific game or genre knowledge, we’ll look for playtesters with that expertise.

This is particularly crucial when testing updates to existing games. If you’ve played the game before, you can better assess the changes. But don’t worry, we also have tests that don’t require any prior gaming experience.

Availability and location are key factors. Most tests are on-site for security reasons, so we prefer participants who are close to our studio in Cary, North Carolina. We understand your time is valuable, especially for shorter tests.

WHAT TO EXPECT

We never require you to prepare for a test. We take this seriously to ensure you remain as unbiased as possible!

Typically, our production team approaches us with something that needs testing or specific knowledge before making a decision. Our job is to assist them by providing relevant data and research to help them make informed decisions.

This can range from the overall feel of a game to specific details, like how you interact with different buttons.

Our playtesting generally focuses on broader appeal, flow, and feel, unlike our in-house Quality Control team, which is more technically oriented.

While we appreciate you reporting any bugs or technical errors you find (and we do report them!), that’s usually not our primary focus. We have an amazing Quality Control team for that. So, please make sure you understand what we’re asking of you in each test to avoid focusing on aspects we’re not evaluating.

The duration of tests can vary. Some last 30 minutes to an hour, while others, especially those requiring extensive playthroughs, can last several days or even weeks.
